Visualize It: Using Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategies Recorded Webinar
Solving word problems is a challenge for students, especially those with mathematics difficulties. This is often because solving word problems requires students to read and understand the problem, identify relevant information, choose an appropriate strategy, solve the problem correctly, and ensure that the answer makes sense (Iris Center, 2019). This session, facilitated by Tamara Smith-Moyler, T-TAC ODU’s Mathematics Educational Specialist, will focus on using three evidence-based strategies for mathematics instruction--visual representations, the metacognitive strategy UPS-Check, and the cognitive strategy Schema Instruction to help students conceptually understand how to solve word problems.
