Executive Skills and Reading Comprehension: Assessment and Intervention

Special Educators, General Educators, Lead Teachers, Reading Specialists, and Administrators. The session is designed for educators who work with students who struggle with reading comprehension (i.e. Autism Spectrum Disorders, Learning Disabilities and ESL).
Skilled readers use high level thinking skills as they make a plan for understanding text, resist distractions, manage information, and make sense of text. Without these skills, students can struggle to comprehend what they read. Fortunately for struggling readers, these executive skills (ES) can be taught.
Part one will focus on executive skills; the role of ES in effective reading comprehension instruction and ES-based intervention strategies. The second half of this session will focus on a researched-tested intervention for students with strong decoding skills, yet limited comprehension, or "word callers”.
Workshop participants will receive copies of Dr. Cartwright's books, Executive
Skills and Reading Comprehension, A Guide for Educators (2015) and Word Callers: Small-Group and One-to-One Interventions for Children Who Read but Don’t Comprehend (2010).
